Greg - re: "Or are you saying that the battered software companies will hang their hat on the UNIX O/S for an individual pc windows system?"

You original question, I believe, asked if companies other than Microsoft would attempt to produce an Operating System to compete with Windows 98.

My answer was no - but some would work on various flavors of UNIX.

The applications software companies will work on applications to support Windows 98, Windows NT and the BIG ONES will include IA64 versions of UNIX for ENTERPRISE Business applications.

Windows 98 is a "competent" desktop OS for stand alone applications and as a "client" platform with which to access networks/servers running Windows NT and/or UNIX.

Re: "no one wants to use one operating system at work and come home and have to deal with a different system on their home computer. Guess that gives MSFT the edge."

Excellent point - Microsoft's OS exists on 100's of millions of PCs in business - and most software runs on their OS's. That's a fact.

It could be worse - a lot worse!

Do you remember the 99 flavors of hardware specific CP/M - all incompatible with each other.

Do you remember 25 different UNIX OS's - all with slightly different names - which were all pretty much incompatible with each other except for basic UNIX utilities?

The Microsoft world beats the heck out of a Tower of Babble.
