You're absolutely right about the Asian BS and its possible impact on the broader market. BTW it seems that more of the same occurred over night: Wake-Up Call: More Asian Trouble Has Wall Street Getting Edgier By Justin Lahart Staff Reporter 1/8/98 8:27 AM ET Asia. Again. Hopes for stability in the Far East are once more being sorely tested this morning. Stock markets there dropped again, and the U.S. looks weak. At 8:10 a.m. EST the S&P 500 futures (which closed below fair value last night) are off 3.70, indicating a good-sized drop at the open. At the heart of the problem is Indonesia, which is rather blatantly ignoring the terms of its International Monetary Fund bailout. That has drawn criticism from the IMF, the U.S. government and the global investment community. With the country's credibility severely damaged, and the possibility that IMF credit outlays will be suspended, the Indonesian rupiah, and stock market, plunged overnight. The Jakarta Composite Index fell 47.13, or 11.96% to close at 347.11. Interbank rates in Hong Kong climbed again, as authorities attempt to inoculate the Hong Kong dollar against regional currency weakness. That sent the Hang Seng down 284.08, or 2.98%, to close at 9254.53. The Hang Seng less than 200 points off its October low of 9059.80. Should the Hang Seng break that mark, things may get dire, indeed. Japan, on the face of it, didn't fare so badly. The Nikkei dropped 8.99 points to close at 15,019.18. But the market had been up nearly 600 points in its morning session. When traders got back from lunch, and saw what was happening in the Southeast Asia (which opens later than Japan), they took stocks right back down. As far as INTC, RUMOR from an associate in the semiconductor business has it that INTC will meet or slightly beat estimates. This could be a great boost going into CPQ earnings. Anyone have a feeling for others reporting B4 CPQ? AMD, MOT, LLTC, DIG, AAPL, SUN, MSFT??? TIA Skipper
