OK. Here is what's out there now from MS:
Highlights from company presentations at Morgan Stanley's Annual
Software & Networking Conference, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Ascend Communications (ASND, $28, Outperform, $45 price target)

MS says that ASND appears comfortable with consensus revenue estimates of $288 million for 4Q/97. Asia is expected to decline to roughly 12% of sales in 4Q/97 from about 25% a year ago while revenue from Europe is expected to increase sequentially.

For 1998, management expects flat Asia revenue.

MS says that ASND expects a slight sequential revenue increase in 1Q/98 due to strong domestic growth. For fiscal 1998, management expects revenue growth of 15-20% driven by its core switching and GRF
business.

Per MS, ASND management expects to introduce its new high density access concentrator in 1H/98. The list price for the new product could be up to 20% less than current prices. MS says that they are optimistic about this product introduction because it does not require significant software changes.

RE Williams, MS says ASND expects to begin shipments in 1Q/98 of its recently introduced CX 550 ATM switch with OC-48 capability under a $150 million contract.

MS adds that ASND's products are currently in trials with several
carriers for voice and facsimile over IP network applications. Other
product development efforts include ATM to SONET connectivity and SS7
signaling capabilities.

MS says that ASND plans to consolidate its enterprise products
Pipeline and video) into a new Enterprise Access division to be
headquartered in New Jersey.

Per MS, ASND expects circuit switched, TDM, and packet/cell networks to converge towards IP dominant transport networks with ATM switching fabrics tied to SONET networks.

[That's all folks. Pales to Gary's feedback doesn't it?]

Williams Re-Enters Backbone Role With Big Deals (Inter@ctive Week)

From Inter@ctive Week Online for January 7, 1998 by Peter Lambert

With a flourish, Williams Communications Group ended a three-year
noncompete agreement with WorldCom Inc., announcing a $150 million
infrastructure upgrade contract with Ascend Communications Inc., a
20-year, $260 million transmission capacity lease to carrier Intermedia Communications Inc. and a five-year, multimillion-dollar capacity lease to U S West Communications Group.

In January 1995, Williams sold all but one strand of its 11,000-mile
national fiber-optic network - built by pulling fiber through thousands of decommissioned natural-gas pipelines - to WorldCom for $2.5 billion. The noncompete clause in that deal kept Williams from launching a range of frame relay, cell relay and private business line services.

Until now.

"We are back, big time," said Howard Janzen, president and chief
executive officer of Williams Communications, which includes equipment
and multimedia integration services provider WilTel; national fiber
network provider Williams Network; international fiber and satellite
transmission service provider Vyvx; network conferencing and enhanced
fax services provider Global Access; and interactive distance learning
provider Williams Learning Network.

Claiming 125,000 customers and 8,000 employees, Williams plans to extend its fiber-optic network to 18,000 miles by year's end. The network will feature Ascend's newest generation of Asynchronous Transfer Mode and frame relay multiservice, "intelligent core" switches.

"The traditional voice infrastructure has served packet data services
well until now, but the network Williams is building and the new
networks people will build are needed to accommodate the huge growth in data traffic," said Dan Smith, executive vice president and general
manager of Ascend's core systems division.

U S West will use Williams' network to extend its !nterprise Data
Networking Services and planned long-distance consumer services to
customers beyond its 14-state region. Intermedia will use the network to extend its voice, data and video services reach from 22 to 35 markets by mid-1998 and its capacity to 2.5 gigabits per second and beyond over the 20-year deal.

The goal, Janzen said, is "to build the nation's premier backbone for
wholesale services." The company claims that $1 billion in long-term
commitments from wholesale customers is in place.

America's Fastest-Growing High Technology Companies Are Announced by Deloitte & Touche LLP

Business Wire via Dow Jones

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 1998--

Integrated Process Equipment Corp. and Cascade Communications

Corp. Lead 500 Companies Identified Across the United States by

National Study

Deloitte & Touche LLP announces the fastest-growing technology companies in the United States for 1997 as determined by its national Technology Fast 500 awards (the full list of 500 companies follows this release).

Phoenix-based Integrated Process Equipment Corp. (IPEC) won first place with an astounding revenue growth increase of 71,136 percent, while second-place winner Cascade Communications Corp. (Ascend) of Westford, Mass., also experienced hypergrowth with a 41,686 percent five-year growth rate increase. Growth rates ranged from 71,136 to 485 percent, with the average growth rate at 2,495 percent.

Roger McDaniel, president and chief executive officer of first-place winner IPEC commented on his company's phenomenal growth by saying, "There was an early recognition of the need for machines to perform wafer planarization to enable the production of faster, more complex semiconductor devices. With a lot of hard work and close customer relations, IPEC has been able to lead the market in each of these."

Second-place award winner Cascade Communications Corp. (Ascend) was also very proud of its success and recognition in 1997. "We're helping to create a world where every computer has a simple and direct access to every other computer -- a world where data tone is as easy to access as dial tone," said Dan Smith, chief executive officer for Cascade.

The list of winning companies shows that Northern California once again leads the country as a high technology hub, serving as a base for 16 percent of the Fast 500 companies. Massachusetts closely follows Northern California with 12 percent, followed by Southern California with 10 percent, and Virginia with 9 percent. The list also shows that technology companies are spreading beyond their usual locations.

"We are seeing new technology clusters emerging in states all across the country, states not traditionally known for having high technology industries. For instance, Missouri and Kansas are beginning to develop a technology core," said Mark Evans, national managing director for Deloitte & Touche's High Technology Group.

Software companies dominate the Technology Fast 500, totaling 24 percent of the entire list. Software companies are experiencing especially strong growth in part due to the Internet boom and current demand for Internet-related products. These companies are taking advantage of rapidly growing market demand by producing Web- and intranet-specific products, such as site-authoring and maintenance tools, electronic commerce software, webcasting services and various
Web and intranet utility products.

A CEO survey was conducted as part of the Technology Fast 500 awards. Among the respondents, Deloitte & Touche found that 68 percent of Fast 500 CEOs who founded the company are still at the helm. Eighty-nine percent stated that high-quality employees were the number one factor contributing to their success, while 88 percent agreed that their biggest current challenge was finding, hiring, and retaining qualified technical employees.

The Technology Fast 500 is a unique awards program that exclusively recognizes fast-growing technology companies. The companies are ranked by percentage growth in revenue over a five-year period. To qualify for the Fast 500 recognition, companies must have been in business for five years, with 1992 revenues of at least $50,000, and must be a U.S. company developing and/or providing technology products or services.

Deloitte & Touche LLP is one of the nation's leading professional services firms, providing accounting and auditing, tax, and management consulting services through 23,000 professionals in more that 100 U.S. cities. Deloitte & Touche LLP is part of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, a global leader in professional services with more than 72,000 people in 128 countries.
