"On the Beach" was a magical film that explored the end of the world, provided:

A.) You suspend disbelief that the nuclear war had thoroughly wiped-out all life in the Northern Hemisphere leaving absolutely no one alive the people in Australia.

B.) You're sufficiently an insular Canadian-American-English-Australian that the Southern Hemisphere doesn't include New Zealand, Indonesia, Micronesia, South America and southern Africa.

The only similar production that springs to mind is the Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough at Last".

"Witness Mr. Henry Bemis, a charter member in the fraternity of dreamers. A bookish little man whose passion is the printed page, but who is conspired against by a bank president and a wife and a world full of tongue-cluckers and the unrelenting hands of a clock. But in just a moment, Mr. Bemis will enter a world without bank presidents or wives or clocks or anything else. He'll have a world all to himself... without anyone.

Avid-reader Burgess Meredith as Henry Bemis emerges from his bank's vault after eating his lunch into a wholly destroyed city with no human life — but canned food to last a lifetime, a library of books, and no clocks to interrupt his reading. Paradise until Mr. Bemis steps on his glasses and breaks the lenses.

There's a lot that doesn't seem possible or believable about this episode, but suspend your disbelief and it's magic.

Henry Bemis in the bank vault having lunch and reading.

Out of the bank vault and into the destroyed world with no other person alive.
