The government broadcast a request on national television Thursday for the nation's citizens to donate any gold they owned, such as jewelry, to help alleviate the debt crisis. And in a New Year's address, President-elect Kim Dae-jung warned of "many unimaginable hardships" facing South Korea in 1998.
