In a nutshell, the North Atlantic Oscillation pattern abruptly went from high positive to high negative rather quickly.

Greenland has been anomalously cold all summer, and that pattern changed. The atmosphere responded, and a large ridge formed over Baffin Bay. The flow across North America 'buckled' and blocked cool air into eastern U.S., which caused the mid-atmosphere to drop, forming a trough. Consequently, the atmosphere ridged over the Pacific Northwest...like a wave.

Why did the atmosphere choose now? I don't really know. Why is the ridge so strong over Pacific Northwest? Ocean patterns typically enhance these atmospheric features, causing certain events to be really strong versus run-of-the-mill. Also, non-linear interactions could just lead to a large amplitude.

There's been a set-up to form a pervasive ridge out west all summer. Whether it's forcing from tropics of upper-atmosphere, I'm not exactly sure. If it were my job, I'd study it more :)

This does make me wonder if the "Polar Vortex" is gearing up this winter, especially as El Nino fades. Last winter, it was over Siberia. We'll see. Lots we don't know when forecasting beyond 5 days!
