This is not terribly surprising. Singapore is a huge point of freight exchange moving cargo between East and West. The many times I have been there, I have seen hundreds or more cargo ships laying at anchor in the surrounding waters waiting for cargo offload/ onload activity at the many gantry ways that surround the island.

Through the Malacca Straits ships gain access to the Indian Ocean and all the countries that front to it. This is one of those natural choke points for international shipments and why the British took control of it in the old days of its Empire. To the East lies the South China Sea and access to Vietnam, China, Korea Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, and of course eventually the US and Panama, Central and South America and to the SE Australia & NZ.

It would be difficult to maneuver a large ship through this gauntlet if one is experienced to do it. But a young military crew may not have that experience under their belt.

We have only ourselves to blame. Firewalls that once strictly separated news from opinion have been replaced by hopelessly blurred lines. Once-forbidden practices such as editorializing within straight news reports, and the inclusion of opinions as if ...
