Prices paid to U.S. factories, farmers and other goods
producers fell 1.2 percent last year, the best inflation showing
in decade at the wholesale level. Last year's drop in the
producer price index -- capped by a 0.2 percent decline in
December -- followed a 2.8 percent increase in 1996, the Labor
Department said. The yearly decline was the largest since a 2.3
percent drop in 1986, and the first since a 0.1 percent dip in
1991, the government said.
