[ADSL position]

<<<
In view of our 1 year (or so) back discussion on the ADSL vs Cable modem, did you change your opinion at all? Or you still think cable modems have very litle chance?>>>

I've always thought cable was a viable alternative for highspeed bandwidth but I still believe a telco copper solution will win out where there's a choice. Right now there is no choice so it appears that cable is winning. Appearances can be deceiving.

<<<And one more question, how come that the Amaty player (DMT standart) like yourself switched to WSTL rather then AWRE or ALA ?>>>

1) Westell is developing DMT.
2) I have a small position in AWRE.
3) I like ALA but the company is far too big to call it an ADSL play.

<<<
I am not trying to be skeptical or ironic, just curious. And since you are displlaying so much dedication to ADSL I am sure you know this subject much better then me and your opinion and/or advice will be greatly appretiated.>>>

I'm skeptical on all the small ADSL players' chances of winning against the giants. I believe Westell and Aware are both buyout candidates, maybe Orckit, too, though I don't follow it. I also believe Alcatel, Siemens, Motorola, Fujitsu, ADI, Cisco, and TI will be among the top winners in ADSL, each in its own way. I'm sure there are others among the networkers, but I don't follow them, so can't say who'll be at the top. I include Cisco b/c of their relationship with GTE and the purchases they've made that indicate they're serious about the technology.

I think ADSL will be deployed in '98 and that '99 will be the blow-out year for growth.

With Westell, I'm still looking for more strength in management before I'll believe they're out of the woods.

Regards,

Pat
