LAS VEGAS (Dow Jones)--Mitsubishi Electric America and Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) plan to begin shipping commercial samples of a new chip set for digital television receivers at the end of the first quarter.

In a press release Thursday, the companies said the chip set enables digital televisions, set - top boxes, personal computers and other digital appliances to receive digital video and CD-quality audio signals from terrestrial broadcast stations.

According to the companies, the chip set meets the North American Advanced Television Standards Committee digital television standard for both high-definition television and standard-definition digital television.

The demodulator and demultiplexer chips were developed by Lucent's Microelectronics Group and Bell Labs.

The video decoder was developed by Mitsubishi Electric and Bell Labs, and the audio decoder and the display processor were developed by Mitsubishi Electric Corp.

Mitsubishi Electric America's Digital Broadcast Business America and Electronic Device Group units will market the Mitsubishi portion of the chip set in North America.

Front-end tuning and demodulation application boards will be available in February, while audio-video decoder boards will be available in the second quarter.

Volume production for the chips is scheduled for the third quarter.

Mitsubishi Electric America is part of Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corp.
