Hi!

If the following article in computerweekly is correct, we will not be able to know what goes on in asia in about 24 months. Possibly ships will not be able to transport goods to the US for the same Y2K reason. So there might be economic consequences (hyper inflation) as a result of market disruptions; although for another reason.

Any thought?

At the present rate or repair on y2k, residents of Britain will not be able to call Africa in 2000. Asia may be cut off, too.

Impossible? Not at all. It's the estimate by British Telecom.

This appeared in COMPUTERWEEKLY NEWS (Jan. 8).

UK telephone calls to Africa, the Middle East and the Far East face disruption in 2000 unless carriers act immediately to ensure their systems are millennium compliant. According to a survey by BT, only 11% of its interconnect partners in Africa and the Middle East have set up millennium projects and are on their way towards achieving compliance.

And just 23% of the telecommunication giant's carriers in Asia-Pacific said they had year 2000 programs under way. . . .

Of the 230 carriers questioned, those in the Americas came out top with 49% taking effective action. Next in line were European operators, 43% of which have effective projects under way.

Most of you will not believe the following. Found it on the SIM site on y2k. Good source of detailed info on Y2K. This adds to my argumentation on telecom problems with Asia.

Interesting e-mail about a conversation with a
major telecomm carrier spokesman. Alan
Simpson provided the following:

Question - "How will the Yr2K problem affect
your global network? Answer - "We believe that
we will be completely Yr2K compliant by the end
of next year (1998), maybe earlier".
Question - "So you don't see any problems with
your network?" Answer - " No, I do not see any
major problems with our equipment."
Question - "What about the overseas networks
that connect to you and the private telephone
service resellers?" Answer - " You had better
ask them."
Question - "You have a problem? Answer "We have a
problem."
Question - "Big Problem?" Answer - "*****
Mess".
Question - "What can you do about it if your
partners aren't compliant?" Answer - "Pull the
plug on them."
Question - "Bit drastic, isn't it?" Answer -
"No, we won't be able to charge for calls
to-and-from them, will lose track of calls,
overcharge and have one customer service
nightmare. If they are not ready they are off the
network".

Anyone else asked a telcomm service provider
the same series of questions and got an answer
yet?
