The phrase has a nasty history. 'Nationalism' has a nasty history. Both are closely associated with fascism because of it. A lot of what Trump talked about are the same things that Mussolini talked about. Attacking the press is a hallmark of fascists in their attempts to gain control.

In Europe, as here, white supremacists and fascists are very closely associated. In Europe at least, Putin has been funding said groups for a while. Because such movements promise to cause disruption in Europe and open at least some countries to Russian influence.

So we have an election where historical phrases and ideas that are closely associated with the rise of fascism in Europe during the 1920s and 1930s and everyone is supposed to forget those things? Keep in mind, the fascists in Europe had a lot of American support. Heck, Hitler was on the cover of Time magazine.
