Slightly Off-topic: New Rules for Reporting EPS

For those of you who at least skim Annual Reports, there will be a change in the way EPS is listed. See:

interactive.wsj.com

Here's a summary if you aren't a WSJ Interactive subscriber. Starting this year, two EPS figures will be reported in the financial statements: a basic EPS and a diluted EPS. The diluted EPS will be lower than the basic EPS for many corporations who utilize options, warrants, etc. Only the EPS numbers will be affected - actual net earnings will not be affected by the change. And in many cases (WSJ mentioned MSFT and DELL), corporations already report the more conservative diluted EPS, so the change shouldn't be a shock.

A potential problem arises from the fact that not everyone (WSJ, S&P, etc.) is agreeing on which EPS number (or both) to print. The WSJ noted that the basic and diluted EPS numbers can often vary by 5% or more, so be sure and pay attention when the earnings start coming out next week.

Wrong Paul, I'm not testy. Have you checked out the Asian markets tonight?

You Intel longs are headed for real disaster.

You are what is known as dead wrong about where things are heading.
