New technologies such as the Internet created new industries, but they obviously destroyed others. I don't know if you knew the company Blockbuster, but it soared for many years and then collapsed. The collapse was extraordinarily fast. By the time they realized they had a problem there wasn't enough cash left to do anything about it (streaming etc.). Netflix took their market and Dish bought their assets.

The rise and fall of companies are something to behold. So what causes companies to collapse and collapse so fast? It is the core of my investment strategy. For me it's innovation. When I hear a CEO say he's doing nothing during an earnings call, I start looking for a better company. Doing nothing is no longer an option.

The amount of time a company remains successful is falling. It used to be decades, now it's around 14 years depending on the source. Wasting money on stock buybacks drives me nuts. Do they realize how short their time is?
