Yes, that's part of it but it gets worse. The computer program can send a buy signal at one price and a sell signal at another creating a trend in a stock that is not based in reality. It can move the stock up or down without actually putting any money at risk.

Yep, IMO the only 'economic benefit' it has is in the money spent by people like Katsuyama to develop alternate exchanges to get away from these people. Other thing is, there are buildings full of very bright quants here in Chicago with advanced degrees that spend their days writing 'better' algorithms for these trading firms. One would think there are more useful ways these people could use their talents, but I guess money talks....
