Well duh. Sure, they aren't the same. I neither said nor implied that they were. But they do introduce latency, as anyone with knowledge of networking knows. And what I stated.

When you talk about wired networks, wireless is different, the concept of "nearness" is all about the hops. Now it can roughly correlate to physical nearness, but that isn't necessarily the case. Granted, the exact latency in a particular switch or router can vary, but in general you can safely ignore that and concentrate on the hops. Those factors you can't control. The number of hops often can be.
