Beginning around the 1950s women began to enter the workforce. From 1950 to about 2000 the line is almost straight up (clearly no major declines). There are a lot of reasons for this, but one is that men couldn't make enough to survive. Women were forced to work to keep the illusion of middle-class growth and business had access to more workers which forced wages down. St. Louis Fed The numbers then stayed mostly constant and then gradually began to decline. As women left the workforce the participation rate declined. Republicans blamed President Obama even though the LPR peaked under Clinton. They like to lie. They need to lie. Regardless, the increase in the supply of workers resulted in a decline of wages (supply and demand) and as wages declined so did the middle class. Our decline is self-evident. China is growing far faster than we will ever be able to grow and will surpass us while we talk about cutting taxes of corporations and giving tax cuts to rich people. Our states are hit with major hurricanes and we have politicians talking about cutting taxes not increasing taxes. There isn't any sanity left in the US and our decline is caused by our inability to stop failing (giving away money we don't have to the oligarchs that control the country). FDR saved the nation from economic collapse so today republicans are hell bent on undoing everything he and every other Democrat did to fix what business broke. Did business keep the air and water clean or did we force them to do it? Did business raise wages or did we force them? Even today in election after election voters demand higher wages which mean less money going to the oligarchs (that you defend).
