Comark To Supply PBS with DTV Advice, Gear

Comark Communications of Southwick, Mass. inked a deal Jan. 6 to provide the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) with expertise and engineering counsel as it converts from analog-to-digital broadcasting, including the network's plans to broadcast in HDTV during some evening programming (See VTN, Dec. 15).

Comark's president and CEO, Navroze Mehta, said the agreement means a competitive edge in selling "the full gambit" of DTV gear to PBS's 350 affiliate stations.

"PBS could facilitate purchase of our DTV gear to affiliates," Mehta said, pointing out that the company can fully outfit a DTV facility.

But a push from the mother network may not be necessary. The executive said, "we're already well recognized by all of the affiliates."

Mehta wouldn't say how much the consulting deal is potentially worth, because it depends on what those 350 stations decide they need. He also indicated acquisitions of other vendors could follow as well. (Comark, 413/569-0116)
