"A real fiscal conservative should do whatever it takes to get a balanced budget including raising taxes. Are they fiscal conservatives or tax cutters?"

And there in lies the rub. Trump is not a fiscal conservative and neither is the Republican caucus. With our guys in charge of Congress the deficit is growing again in the"good times".

There are two ways to cut the deficit - first cut spending and second - grow revenues. There is essentially no way this government is going to cut spending until there is a national crisis - a crisis that that I believe is coming. That leaves growing revenues. Changing tax policy is critical to growing revenues and perhaps critical to enable reduction in some entitlement programs. In my mind changing tax policy includes elimination of most of the loop holes that enable the avoidance of taxes. IMO the most impactful change would be the reduction of the corporate rate and means to achieve repatriation of foreign earnings.

Simply put this nation cannot afford its current package of entitlements and in 2020 we will have the D party running on a massive expansion of entitlements. We are at a cross roads. It is imperative that Trump or another Republican wins in 2020.

In my mind a growing economy could create the atmosphere that enables reductions in entitlements and at the same time grows revenues.

I for one do not think austerity is the way to our national success.

Edit: I note that in today's WSJ the 2nd editorial describes how the Republican House has returned to "Regular Order" and sent 12 separate appropriation bills to the Senate. This is the first time this has been done since 2004. This is a major step towards sanity in government.
