Rarebird, I enjoy following your posts. Thanks for the interesting thoughts and perspectives:)

I agree that racism is a human problem. As a Chinese woman who has experienced blatant racism as a child, I certainly wouldn't want anyone to experience what I went through. Suffice to say that I have horror stories but as an adult, things seem to have toned down somewhat, especially since Chinese women are now viewed as somewhat exotic (yes, someone did tell me that lol!)

Growing up in a predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, my children were mocked with the slanted eyes and the sing-song chinky chink. It immediately took me back to my youth and so I morphed into Mother Hen mode, shocked that this could still happen to the next generation. The Orthodox gentleman who answered the door assured me that it was not right and would never happen again. And it never did:)

Now my 18 year old son, over 6' tall and with the casual cool looks of an Asian celebrity (yes, he's been mistakenly chased by tourists lol!), attends law school in French in Montreal. He stands apart from the average student by virtue of his ethnicity and his accent; he's been asked whether he just arrived from Paris. Yet he assures me that he has made so many friends and is having such a great experience in university.

So, I have faith and optimism and the beat goes on:)

Nope not glorifying anything.. Would be happy to have not had such experience.. But to not understand that experience transcends simple empathy is in IMO naive. A good peron that survives these things is not only stronger.. But more balanced.. some folks get broken and bitter .. That is sad.. You seem to have come out on the plus side
