My area has ADSL and it runs around $30 a month. The modem "lease" is included in the $30 and we receive free upgrades (ie we're NOT responsible for buying any "modems"!) The only other charge is installation and the network card (the adsl device connected to your computer via ethernet). The device is made by Westell.

The only thing is, once this takes off the bandwidth will drop as too many users will be using your ISP's pipe at the same time. My ISP estimates that there'll be 150-200 ADSL users per T1, which means during conjested hours you'll download as fast as what your ISP is gettingm, shared by some 150-200 users (approximately 10,000 bps if split evenly)

Larger phone companies stand a great chance of providing widespread service however because they're the ones of capital to upgrade their lines to OC3 and above service.
