Re: Look at what Iomega did to Syquest.

Syquest did not have an established base of 12 MM drives.

Re: having 250 MM shares O/S, that is totally irrelevant. Jeez, Syquest has 150MM. Does that make them a big cap?

Ken, I respect your opinion to get out of Iomega this week. No one really knows what the future will hold. But, jeez, you held this long, how come you wouldn't hold just 2 more weeks from today for earnings?

You said you thought they'd post good earnings this quarter (for the last time). If they do as you say, your options will be worth AT LEAST as much 2 weeks from now as they are worth today.

Anyway, good luck to you. God bless us all.

Not a proper comparison. SyQuest was, and is, a niche player. Iomega was a niche player three years ago. Zip is now a mainstream product. Totally different dynamics.

Re: >>>Look at what Iomega did to Syquest. The same thing 'could' happen to Iomega.<<<

I can't see it Ken.

Syquest did of course own the removable market at one time, but I think it's important to remember that this was primarily Macintosh with a focus on the graphics, pre-press, publishing, etc market. Syquest never had a handle on the PC market. The PC market was completely open for the taking.

Syquest was late to see what Iomega management envisioned: a low entry cost removable that's easy to use and has enough capacity and speed for the vast majority of users.

Their vision backed by expert marketing allowed the Zip to become an instant hit. Timing has also been a key factor. At the time, the graphics world was transitioning more and more to PCs from Macs and the Internet explosion was rapidly ramping up.

The same opportunities that Iomega took advantage of to drive out Syquest are not there for Syquest today. The window has come and gone.

In addition, anyone who wishes to compete with Iomega today will have to deal with one key issue that cannot be legally manufactured: compatibility. Low cost and/or improved performance alternatives from the competition will not be sufficient IMO.

There will of course be those who have few compatibility needs, or where capacity and performance are critical requirements, and this is where Syquest and others will probably do well. It's unlikely at this point they'll be a real threat to Iomega's core customer base for some time to come, if ever.
