Thomas,
I have had to defer to my wife on your question
because I didnt know frankly. She tells me that there
are severance benefits proscribed by law. It basically calls
for severance pay equal to anywhere from 2 weeks to several
months depending on length of service. There are no unemployment benefits in Malaysia. You were quite right to popint out that in the U.S. it is entirely up to the company as to any benefits at the
time of severance. This is probably because of the mandatory "unemployment" insurance that companies must carry on employees.
The benefit from such insurance is very minimal however. In reality
most companies provide some benefit, usually two weeks equivalent pay or more. But I have heard some horror stories.
Best,
Stitch
