‘Lives Were Saved’ When Teacher Subdued Gunman at Illinois School

By MAYA SALAMSEPT. 22, 2017

When a student opened fire in the cafeteria of Mattoon High School in Illinois on Wednesday, the outcome could have been a lot worse had it not been for a teacher who physically subdued the gunman shortly after he began shooting, the police said.

“Lives were saved by the quick response of a teacher here, and I think that’s what needs to be noted,” Jeff Branson, chief of the Mattoon Police Department, said in a news conference, hailing the efforts of the teacher, Angela McQueen. The gunman was taken into custody by the school’s resource officer.

One student was injured after being shot, Chief Branson said. The victim was in stable condition and in “good spirits” as of Wednesday, according to Larry Lilly, superintendent of Mattoon schools. The suspect remains in custody.

Angela McQueen, 40, has been credited with taking down the suspect. After overwhelming the suspect, Ms. McQueen, 40, began to check on those around her, said Anna Morton, a Mattoon High School student. “She was walking around and making sure everything was O.K.” Anna told CBS News. “And I went up and gave her a hug and thanked her. Because that could have been a lot worse.”

The names of the victim and the suspect, both minors, were not disclosed by the police or the state’s attorney office.

“She’s been trained obviously,” Chief Branson said of Ms. McQueen. If it hadn’t been for her, the police chief said, “the situation would have been a lot different.”

“It was the school employee who took this on,” he added.

Ms. McQueen did not respond to calls and emails. Mattoon High School pointed to statements on its website and Facebook page and declined to comment further.
