The assumption that growing cotton was exclusive to black labor is a very flawed conclusion.

If I had to guess, probably more than 50% of my cousins and 100% of my aunts and uncles were deeply involved in the process.....the slaves in my grand fathers operation were his kids (they did get a nickel each to blow on depression era Saturday nights).....I'm sure that was a common thread through out the cotton belt with smaller farmers before mechanical harvesting became the norm.

My good luck was to know enough about it from a distance without the "practical" experience....more than one race ran away from the cotton patch.
