This has always been an interesting crossroads of different cultures from around the world.

A lot of previously unquestioned assumptions get challenged, even mine. As it should be.

Police responded to acid attacks in Stratford Centre shopping mall in East London this evening at 8 pm local time.

Police Chief Superintendent Ade Adelekan said: "I would like to be very clear concerning this incident."

"What initially may have been perceived as a number of random attacks has, on closer inspection, been found to be one incident involving two groups of white males."

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after police reviewed CCTV footage. Another young male was arrested on suspicion of GBH intoxication.

Ambulance crews treated six males at the scene for their injuries, and three of them were taken to hospital. A homeless man splashed with acid ran into a Burger King to wash the acid off his face.

Teenager James Turvey said he was sprayed as he ran to help a friend. The 18-year-old, who suffered irritated skin near his eyes, said: “

"We were in McDonald’s and, as we got outside, my mate was surrounded by about ten guys. “They circled him and started punching him. People ran to help him and the thugs put on balaclavas, got out bottles of Lucozade sport-drink filled with acid and started spraying everyone. It was horrific."

“My mate has been rushed to hospital. I don’t know how he’s doing. I don’t know why they did it. They just picked on us.” A friend of another victim said: “These men got out bottles of acid and chased my pals to the station.

Acid attacks have remained on the rise in London as the weapon of choice among young people
