E/Town announces second annual Golden Plug Awards

NEW YORK, January 8, 1998 -- The ballots are in, the votes are counted, and now, the envelope please....

We at E/Town are pleased to announce our second annual Golden Plug Awards. These are our choices for the 33 best products of the year in Home Theater, Home Audio, Home Office, Camcording and On the Go. The winners were chosen by the E/Town editors with a little help from you, our readers.

One Golden Plug Award was also awarded to one overall Product of the Year -- the Sony DVP-S7000 DVD player.

Sony garnered a total of three Golden Plugs. JVC, Panasonic, Canon, Philips/Magnavox, and Aiwa each received two. The award-winning manufacturers were given special Golden Plug certificates for display in their respective booths at CES.

We picked these winners based on a number of factors, some of them admittedly paradoxical. Our three primary factors for judging a particular product were overall value, technological advancement or superiority, and functionality.

In some cases, we picked a product based on its price; the Pioneer VSX-D606S Dolby Digital a/v receiver and the Philips CDR-870 CD recorder each both broke substantial price barriers for their product categories without subverting their quality. In other cases, we considered the technological breakthrough, such as the Toshiba TP71G90 71-inch rear projection TV, the Panasonic Telenium cordless phone/cel phone combination, and the MTX BeepWear pager watch combo. It all depended on the product and the product category.

Obviously, we expect some of our choices to be controversial. Feel free to take issue with our choices on our Message Board.

Fourteen of E/Town's Golden Plug Award winning products are being given away as part of the $15,000 E/Town Golden Plug Contest, which will run through the end of this month. You can enter this contest whether you're in Las Vegas or at home enjoying the show vicariously through our special coverage of the show on our special Virtual CES site.

Here is the complete list of winners, all of which are linked to their original review or coverage on E/Town. Those winners with an asterisk (*) are included in the E/Town Golden Plug Contest.
