origin of the term "silver bullet" to mean magic solution?

Depends on where you want time to start.

I first heard "silver bullet" used heavily in the mid/late '80s regarding the rage about CASE tools such as Excellerator, ADW, Bachman, etc.

Before that I think perhaps Fred Brooks' in his classis "Mythical Man-Month" book about the construction of IBM's MVS OS in the '60s...

Before that... perhaps The Lone Ranger & his silver bullets?

Before that... protecting yourself from werewolves with a silver cross?
