As I recall, it was Jefferson's heirs, not his bankers, that had to deal with his debts. Also at one point there was a public fund drive to keep Monticello from being seized by creditors. I haven't reviewed all this recently--but Jefferson seems to have been thoroughly American in a willingness to take on debt.

Revered as a great man nevertheless. Slaves and all.
