3Com's strategy will be to encourage enterprises to take their Cisco 7500 collapsed backbone routers, move it out to be their WAN router and install 3Com's L3 switch as the switch/routing backbone for their enterprise.

Much of that strategy will be put on hold while IT managers solve more pressing needs such as solving Y2K issues.

I have read many press release about the introduction of a new layer 3 switch. Could you tell what it does compared to a router in a short simple fashion?
