My speculative hypothesis: Paddock was playing video poker to cover for blackjack card counting. /1 Replying to @tedfrank You can't be a professional gambler with just video poker, and he was playing too much not to be losing money. /2 But high-rolling card counters sometimes play video poker on the side to seem like a square, obtain comps, and avoid detection. /3 Paddock moved around a lot--but to go on gambling trips. That's consistent with a card counter avoiding detection, but not video poker. /4 A video poker player maximizing comps plays in one chain of casinos, like someone in an airline mileage loyalty program. /5 And white/Asian introverted male with an accounting or math background is the stereotypical card counter. /5 (That should have been 6.) Playing as much $100 video poker as Paddock did has an expected loss of $1/hand with hella variance. /7 So he had another source of income to cover that quick leak. Maybe he was really lucky in real estate, and was spending it down. /8 Or maybe he was drug- or gun-running like Walter White and laundering money through big cash deposits and withdrawals at casinos. /9 Whatever it is, there's something in Paddock's finances that hasn't been publicized yet. /10 One more thing. The really top 100 or so counters need enormous skills in deception and logistical planning and sneaking around. /11 Does that remind you of the skill set of anyone in the news? /12 I don't say any of this with certainty. Meeting the profile of big card counters is necessary, but not sufficient. /13 But combined with the missing pieces in the Paddock story, it's a plausible hypothesis worth investigating. /14 FWIW, smartest top counter I know emailed to say, nah, Paddock probably just had a small affordable leak in his VP. So downgrade theory. /15 And as more details come out, the accepting losses for comp-hunting theory seems to fit better. t.co /16 .............. The family would have heard of the big wins, he wouldn't tell them of big losses, they'd see the comped suites, have wrong perception. /19 So another theory is just a lucky break at real estate investing, and a clueless brother who repeats bogus braggadocio. /20 None of this goes to motive. But the brother's description of finances didn't add up. /21 S0_L337_1T_HURTS ? @S0_L337 Replying to @tedfrank Friend does this, not uncommon. Plays blkjck to earn $$$, then video poker/slots for comps. Tours casinos, rinse repeat as full time "job"There is something funny about Paddock's finances. He had to have had some scheme he worked.
