10/13/2017 Contest update
This week’s natural disaster was closer to my neck of the woods. The hellish fires in Northern California have already caused dozens of deaths, disproportionally among the elderly, and many thousands of homes are completely incinerated. I live a fair distance from the fires, but I can see and smell the smoke. The air quality here is now rated comparable to Beijing’s and quite a few people have donned masks. As we’ve seen, the stock market is little impacted by natural disasters, nor, apparently, are there many triskaidekaphobics on Wall Street, with the major indexes closing the week at record highs.
At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 44.80% YTD (vs. up 45.54% a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 26.97% YTD (vs. up 28.48% a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI), was up 46.51% YTD (vs. up 49.24% a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 22.71% YTD (vs. up 22.42% a week ago).
IMAN’s portfolio, up 111.30% YTD, had an off week but remained in first place. SMALLB’s portfolio, up 99.15% YTD and HRS’s portfolio, up 92.43% YTD, also lost some ground but held on to second and third place.
At Friday's close, 46 of the 48 Contest portfolios continued in the green, with 33 still beating the NBI and 21 still beating the SPSIBI.
The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 32.61% and a median YTD gain of 14.92%, with 118 of the 195 picks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Have a safe & relaxing fall weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
