I don't understand what you mean by "new". Napoleon was on the front lines, as were many other kings, or at least they would send in their close relatives to lead armies. This was partially because you could not trust someone else to turn the army against you and take over the crown. But it was also because the main legitimacy of kings was as protectors of the realm and arbiter of conflicts and contracts. And we are not limited to Europe. You can look it up in China, India, Persia, or wherever else you want to. Heck, even Hitler led his wars.
