Zip demand will continue to be high except when HiFD really rolled out with a low price but Keith did not tell you that Zip can't compare to CD-ROM because CD-ROM media is cheap to publish. It won't cost publisher any more to press a CD than a floppy. Until we can get the zip disk for $1.00, I doubt any publisher will have s/w ship on zip disk (one big reason for CD-ROM market expansion)! Also the success of CD-ROM is based on the fact that there is no other alternative DASD media which can hold 650MB for the price of a floppy disk and this remains true today in 1998 (DVD-ROM is basically an extension of CD-ROM technology). Zip will survive as either a floppy replacement or a niche portable storage device. With the annoucement of HiFD and high cost of zip disk, IOM will have a tougher time (still possible) to market the zip as floppy replacement.
