I hadn't considered that but it sounds feasible. I'm thinking no battery
would have lasted 25 years so maybe it's just a date thing especially
since both boxes seem to have been afflicted at the same time, one
plugged in and one not plugged in.

Those motherboard batteries for the clock generally last a very long time, but after they go, they have to be replaced or otherwise your date and time will be off after rebooting after the computer has completely shutdown.

The good news is that the small dime sized batteries are inexpensive and easy to replace. :)
