From The New York Times: State Sues Lettuce Processor Linked to Ills

By PAM BELLUCK

The state of California on Thursday filed a civil suit against a lettuce processor whose greens were linked to a 1996 outbreak of food poisoning that sickened at least 61 people in the Midwest and the Northeast.

The suit, filed against Fancy Cutt Farms of Hollister, Calif., claims that the company has been violating food-safety laws by processing its lettuce in unsanitary conditions that could allow the greens to become contaminated by toxic bacteria. It asks the state Superior Court to compel Fancy Cutt Farms to correct the problems and, if necessary, impose fines of $1,000 a day until the violations are corrected.
