Where will it end>China Denies It Received Nazi Gold>>

BEIJING -- China denied allegations Thursday that it may have
received Nazi gold looted from Holocaust victims and from occupied
European countries.

The denial came after a former official of Macau, a tiny Portuguese
colony on China's southern coast, was quoted in media reports as
saying that Nazi ingots passed through the territory in 1969 and may
have ended up on the mainland.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Shen Guofang said the Bank of China,
the leading foreign exchange bank, and other government
departments had found no evidence of such a transfer.

''The Chinese mainland has never accepted such gold,'' Shen said at
a twice-weekly news briefing.

Fernando Brito, a former senior official of the Macau Gold Import
Commission, said that in 1969 the colony imported 175 pounds of
gold ingots weekly stamped with the swastika and the word
''Reichsbank,'' the Macau magazine Ponto Final reported.

There was no explanation as to why Nazi gold was still being brought
in two decades after the war.

Brito was quoted as saying that some of the gold may have come
from Hong Kong, which was occupied by the Nazi-allied Japanese
during World War II.

According to U.S. government investigators, neutral Portugal
received at least 134 tons of looted Nazi gold during the war.

Mark-- In your post to Thomas you said "- Now - what did Japan do when they felt vulnerable ..... they whispered something about getting rid of US paper and buying ..... gold!"
Can you tell me where I can find this info? Thanks

Mark - I appreciate your response, but I am surprised at the suggestion that I am attempting to restrict the expression of thought. After all, Richnorth invited comments on the article he posted. I simply posted my opinion, which was to scoff at statements contained in the Chinese Communist paper "Peoples Daily." It was you and he who were apparently dissatisfied with my response, and insisted upon pressing the debate. Please do not be offended that you were then called upon to state your case, as I did briefly. I was hoping to elicit some sort of supporting argument, rather than just the repeated assertion. I tend to couch my arguments in a rather forcefull style on issues that I feel strongly about. I did not mean to offer any offense.

best regards - Tom
