My fellow veteran, he never said he was in the service, he only said he taught a few new shave tails in some van...

You keep assuming things (As I did about your alcoholism. Most non-coms I knew were drunks). I was not an officer. I was the G3's clerk--E-5. Finished college and became the Chief Psychologist for a Federal Prison. Since, I have treated many PTSD veterans and now treat brain-damaged vets. In the Army,t hey kept pushing me to become an officer, and go to jump school and Ranger Training but I had too much sense for that. <g>. Before I became the G3's clerk, I made reports from the Jump School that we had in our Division--8th Inf with 2 Airborne Batallions--504th and 505th. I kept score of Accidents and Incidents. We had a Special School for a 2-Star Air Force General and he was killed on graduation day as his chute didn't open. Also, a friend of mine had the same outcome.
