In order to short stock, to sell stock you don't currently own long, you need to borrow the shares you are about to sell. You have to borrow them from your brokerage firm, so yes, it is normal that the securities loan/lending desk be contacted. Usually the broker does this or, in our case, it is done with a 3 second check to an automated system.

I don't know how eschwab handles their shorts...sounds normal though. They should have a system where you simply enter a short sale and let the ocputers tell you if its ok or not.
