NEW YORK, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Shares in Adaptec Inc dropped
sharply in pre-opening trade Friday after the company said it
foresaw third-quarter income well below analysts' estimates.
"The disaster du jour seems to be Adaptec, because of the
warning," a dealer said. Trade overall was quiet.
Adaptec was trading at 24-3/4 from a Thursday closing price
of 35-15/16. The share had fallen to 27-1/4 in after-hours
trade Thursday.
The company, which makes computer subsystems, software and
chips, said after markets closed that it expected to report
third-quarter operating income of $0.35 to $0.40 a share, or
$0.21 to $0.23 after charges.
The forecasts are well below a consensus estimate for
operating income of $0.56 a share, according to First Call.
Among other active shares, semiconductor maker Intel Corp
eased to 74 from a close of 74-5/16.
