Assange said the Russians weren't the source of the leaked DNC emails. I'm not sure there is any evidence the Russians successfully hacked anything.
There doesn't need to be any evidence. No one in the media cared what Assange said because the quality of the evidence is irrelevant, only the seriousness of the charge.

Trump continues to troll the media with his ego, and the click-hungry media is all too happy to oblige. The shallowness of today's social media society will continue to feed this frenzy until a real crisis emerges.
