I am starting to do more personal work in JAVA in hopes it will become a more useful tool in the near future. It currently won't add anything to my bottom line (my partner and I are accepting less and less contract work as we roll out of own software and we have NOT had any people willing to write a big check to do JAVA work yet). I am hoping to use JAVA as the glue between our app & the internet.

Some info from NC World indicates that early testing of the JDK 1.2 beta may show *slower* performance mainly because it's just a beta. But Sun has committed to performance enhancements in 1.2.

Me, I'd like to see some nice NCs based on Java chips. Some huge performance gains should be possible if you're running Java natively. Sun has talked of a "Java-blaster" card to fit in your PC which would also be cool.

what alternatives to Java are there, besides Visual Basic?

Am I missing something? I didn't think that VB was considered a competitor to Java. I thought they have different reasons for being chosen on a particular project.
