Re: Notebook ZIP <Fred, I share Rocky's concern about the high price. I'm sure you considered the alternatives, and I was wondering, how much was SyQuest's laptop drive? Thanks> I'm not sure if you are serious or are being sarcastic but I will answer under the assumption that you are serious. First, "alternatives" do not exist so there was nothing to consider. Second, all laptop devices from hard drives to modems to RAM cost more than than their desktop counterparts. Third, all new products cost more when they are first introduced (when Microsoft Encarta was first introduced it was $259; now it sells for well under $100). IOM has done an excellent job of setting price points because they understand their markets. They use focus groups to determine what customers are willing to pay. In doing this they get a distribution of volume vs. price so that they have a very good idea of how much incremental volume they can generate by dropping the price $X. This is exactly what they have done with the desktop ZIP. When they feel the time is right, they will generate more volume by dropping the laptop price. Apparently, IOM's studies indicated that a sufficient number of consumers (such as me) would be more than willing to dish out $300 for this wonderful and unique product. Finally, why in the world would I buy a SyQuest drive when everyone I associate and exchange data with uses ZIP?? If I could have gotten a SyQuest lap drive drive for $5, I still would have paid $300 for the ZIP so that I can remain compatable with with 11 million other drives including the ones in my desktops at home and at work. Good luck, FF
