A man is facing multiple charges after he was shot by a homeowner during a break-in at a home in North Carolina early Friday morning.

Jimmie Dunn, Jr., 43, is accused of forcing his way inside a home in New Bern shortly after 6 a.m. Police confirmed Dunn was armed with a gun.

Once inside, Dunn apparently confronted the homeowner and demanded money. The homeowner handed over cash, but then a struggle ensued between the two men. During the struggle, however, the homeowner was able to retrieve a gun and fired several rounds, striking Dunn.

Once officers arrived on the scene, Dunn, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released into police custody. He was charged with first-degree burglary, robbery with a firearm, and assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held on a $1 million bond.

Woman fatally shot as she breaks into neighbor’s home

A 38-year-old woman was shot and killed Saturday night when she tried to break into her neighbor’s home in a Conroe, Texas, subdivision.

The investigation is ongoing, but as of late Sunday, no charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made, according to reports from the Houston Chronicle.

Authorities say the incident unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. when the homeowner, whose name was not released, found her neighbor, Marci Green, trying to break in through her front door. As the homeowner retrieved a .45-caliber handgun, Green then went to the back side of the home.

At the back door, the homeowner repeatedly warned Green not to come inside, but her warnings went ignored. According to Precinct 1 Justice of The Peace Wayne Mack, Green was able to open the screen door and forced her way through the second door. The homeowner said she feared for her safety and fired a single round, striking Green in the abdomen.

Mack said the homeowner had already called the police and was waiting for officers to arrive when the call was upgraded from a burglary in progress to shots fired. Officers arrived soon after the shooting, and Green was transported to an area hospital, where she was officially pronounced dead just after 10 p.m. Mack said he has ordered an autopsy to be performed on Green.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Spencer said physically the homeowner is unharmed, although she remains “shaken up, upset and distraught” over the ordeal. It’s unclear what, if any, relationship the two women had, but part of the investigation will include determining whether there were any prior problems between them.

According to the Montgomery County Police Reporter, Green has a prior criminal history that included a number of theft and drug-related charges.

Spencer said once the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office to determine whether any charges are appropriate.

18-year-old shot while breaking into California home (VIDEO)

10/20/17| by Jennifer Cruz

A California homeowner opened fire on a young man trying to force his way inside his house Monday night, according to the Hesperia Police Department.

Hesperia police said on Tuesday that the suspect, Andres Sanchez, 18, of Hesperia, was in critical condition after the homeowner shot him multiple times during the home invasion robbery attempt.

“Through interviews and evidence at the scene, Detectives believe that for reasons still unknown, Sanchez went to the location and began forcing open the front door as the residents slept,” Hesperia police said in a statement.

According to the statement, the homeowner called 911 around 9:39 pm after hearing noise at the front door and then confronted Sanchez. The homeowner opened fire after Sanchez gained entry to the house.

Once police arrived, they found Sanchez suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was airlifted to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The homeowner was treated for minor injuries by paramedics on the scene.

Police said several other residents, including four juveniles, were home during the incident, but none were injured during the confrontation. Authorities confirmed the armed resident, as well as the others who were inside the home at the time of the break-in, are all fully cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing.

Former Vancouver mayoral candidate kills prowler in yard

A former mayoral candidate in Vancouver, Washington, shot and killed a man lurking in his backyard early Wednesday morning.

Steven Cox, 60, confronted a prowler, 30-year-old Ryan Anderson, in a fenced-in area of his yard around 5 am, a struggle ensued and escalated ultimately ending in gunfire, Vancouver police said in a statement.

A neighbor told reporters he heard arguing before the gunfire. “It sounded like he said, ‘Don’t move,’ or, ‘Don’t get up,’ or something like that,” recalled the neighbor, who did not want to be identified.

The neighbor said a single gunshot then rang out. Anderson was struck by gunfire and, after officers arrived on the scene, was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

Police did not say whether Anderson was armed. At this time, no charges have been filed against Cox, but the incident remains under investigation by the Vancouver Police Department Major Crime Unit.

Cox previously entered the race for Vancouver mayor, but withdrew in September following an incident concerning a city councilor. Cox’s accusations against the city councilor were later proved false, prompting Cox to issue an apology. Cox blamed a brain injury and PTSD for the mix-up.

Anderson’s death came not long after he was released from prison following February 2016 convictions of possession of a stolen vehicle, second-degree possession of stolen property, possession of an illegal access device, and second-degree identity theft, The Columbian reported. Anderson was also convicted of possession of heroin in 2011, for which he was sentenced to spend 90 days in jail.

Knife-wielding kidnapper flees after woman retrieves gun

10/18/17| by Jennifer Cruz
Floyd Rick May was released from prison in July and accused of kidnapping a woman at knifepoint earlier this month. (Photo: Illinois Department of Corrections)

A 61-year-old Illinois man is in jail on a $550,000 bond after the woman he kidnapped pulled a gun on him and escaped.

Authorities arrested Floyd Rick May on charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery with a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and aggravated assault, the Moline Police Department said in a statement. If convicted, May could face up to 30 years in prison.

According to the statement, May, armed with a knife, forced his way into the woman’s vehicle sometime before 1 pm on Oct. 8. After a brief struggle in which the woman, who has not been identified, received a cut on her arm, May held her at knifepoint and forced her to drive to rural location. But the woman had a concealed weapon and drew her pistol on May, who fled at the sight of the gun.

The woman then drove to a nearby hospital where she received treatment for her cut and reported the incident to police. Police said she has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon and will not face charges.

Authorities say May was released from prison in July after serving part of a nine-year stint for armed robbery. He carried out his sentence at the Dixon Correctional Center, the Illinois Department of Correction’s primary psychiatric facility, which houses a Special Treatment Center for mentally ill and developmentally disabled inmates.

Detroit CPL holder unloads on armed suspect (VIDEO)

10/13/17| by Jennifer Cruz

An unidentified concealed carrier thwarted an attempted robbery when he unloaded on the armed suspect in Detroit.

Surveillance video shows the robber, Sanchez Quinn, 29, approach while pointing a gun at the confirmed concealed pistol license holder and his cousin outside a market on Sunday.

The CPL holder told Fox 2 Detroit his first thought was to grab his gun. Video shows him shove Quinn’s pistol away before drawing his own gun and opening fire. Quinn returned fire and the CPL holder’s cousin was caught in the crossfire. It’s unclear whose shots struck the cousin.

Quinn was also struck, but both he and the cousin were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. No charges have been filed against the CPL holder at this time, who appeared to have acted in self-defense. Quinn, as well as a second suspect, are in police custody.

“It makes me mad because you have people out here that work every day. They are innocent; you want to take from them,” the CPL holder told reporters. “These guys, I definitely feel don’t need to be back out on the street because someone else might get hurt and it might happen in a different way.”

The attempted robbery and subsequent shooting was captured on video thanks to Project Green Light — a crime-fighting initiative launched by a partnership between local businesses, the city and community groups — which was launched last January.

Under the initiative, businesses, known as Green Light locations, have installed real-time cameras with videos that can be viewed directly from the police department. Additionally, the Green Light locations have flashing green lights, which authorities say, help to deter crime. So far, more than 120 local businesses have opted to participate in the initiative.

Would-be robber shot by victim after gun jams
10/05/17| by Jennifer Cruz

Church members were preparing for a weekend festival when the crime occurred, but no one – other than the suspect – was injured. (Photo: Facebook)

The victim of a robbery outside a Myrtle Beach church last week had a stroke of luck when the suspect’s gun jammed during an exchange of gunfire, according to reports.

The suspect approached the victim — a security guard — at the Grand Strand Baptist Church around 11 pm on Thursday as people inside prepared for a weekend event. The suspect asked the guard if he had change for a $20 bill, but as the guard reached for his wallet, the suspect trained a gun on his stomach and then took the wallet.

The guard pulled his own gun as the suspect began walking away. In response, the suspect fired a shot, which struck the guard’s car door. Then as the guard returned fire, the suspect attempted to fire a second shot, but his gun apparently jammed. The guard then seized the opportunity and emptied his weapon, striking the suspect multiple times.

The suspect ran to a nearby restaurant and told employees that he was attacked and needed medical attention. When police arrived, witnesses pointed them to the injured man and the area they saw him ditch his gun. They also spoke to the security guard, who identified himself as the shooter.

Horry County police said the suspect, who has not been identified, was brought to the hospital. His condition is unknown.
