I doubt many of the true believer Birthers gave up on the idea. They might have had the good sense not to proclaim it in public, but they likely still believed. The same it true on a wide range of social issues as well, like gay rights, environmental concerns, etc. Many of the more "sane" Republicans won't spout nonsense in public about such things, but when in a circle of like minds or in the ballot box, their inner self pokes out. Trump tapped into that very well, and Dems need to learn from that experience.
