Community Notes -- Architects Pick Blue-Ribbon Buildings

PENINSULA

Three Peninsula projects have received design awards from the
Santa Clara Valley chapter of the prestigious American Institute
of Architects.

The 3Com corporate headquarters in Santa Clara won kudos for a
''bold expression of forms, materials and color in both landscape
and architecture,'' in the jury's opinion.

With below zero coming to Packer-land, I suspect they will
still be thawing out during the game.<g>

3COM CORPORATION'S COREBUILDER 3500 LAYER 3 SWITCH
NAMED HOT PRODUCT BY DATA COMMUNICATIONS

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 1998--Global networking leader 3Com
Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) today announced that its CoreBuilder(TM) 3500 Layer 3
high-function switch has been chosen as a 1997 networking industry "hot product" by Data
Communications magazine in the internetworking category. According to the magazine the
winning products boast a key technology differentiator that sets it apart from the competition.

"The CoreBuilder 3500 multilayer switch's key differentiator is that it can route a variety of
protocols over Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM or FDDI while offering ten times
the performance for as low as one-tenth the cost of a traditional backbone router," said David
Tolwinski, vice president and general manager of 3Com's switching systems business. "We're
very pleased that our CoreBuilder 3500 switch is being so well received by customers and so
widely recognized by networking industry experts, such as Data Communications." According to
one CoreBuilder 3500 switch customer, Deke Kassabian, manager of network engineering at
the University of Pennsylvania, "Multiprotocol routing is important to me. Our major protocol is
IP, but we have a great deal of AppleTalk and IPX too. Our interests extend to the 3500's
policy-based management capabilities as well." About The CoreBuilder 3500 Switch

The CoreBuilder 3500 Layer 3 high-function switch redefines price/performance and
functionality in high-end switching and routing and features unparalleled policy management and
unmatched migration options. With 3Com's advanced FIRE (Flexible Intelligent Routing Engine)
ASIC technology, the switch provides wire-speed Layer 2 and Layer 3 traffic across all 10/100
megabit interfaces scaling performance up to four million packets per second. The switch
supports real-time, multimedia network traffic using the most advanced policy-based networking
services found in networking devices today. Combined with flexible virtual LAN (VLAN)
support, multicast services, multiprotocol routing and network management with remote
monitoring (RMON) and Roving Analysis Port (RAP), the CoreBuilder 3500 Layer 3 switch
provides a robust and resilient networking infrastructure. The CoreBuilder 3500 Layer 3 switch
is designed to act as a backbone router, replacing legacy LAN routers for Layer 3 forwarding
and functionality. It can also be used as an edge device performing Layer 3 forwarding while
connected to a backbone of Gigabit Ethernet or ATM. With superb performance, flexibility, and
network control features, the CoreBuilder 3500 Layer 3 high-function switch is the ideal
networking device for today's mission critical networks. About 3Com Corporation
