Bob,

Like you I have had some good and some bad experiences averaging down. My problem with it is at the philosophical level. When I buy a stock, I think I've done my homework and other then minor day to day fluctuations, I expect it to go up. When it undergoes a significant decline, it is telling me my analysis may be wrong. If my analysis may be wrong, there is no reason to add to the position. It just seems to make more sense that if your are going to add to a position, to add to positions that have already proven themselves worthy, by averaging up.

Allan,

I have two stocks UTEK and PAIRGAIN. In my opinion and BB opinion on UTEK they are good companies. I bought both at about $29 and now UTEK is at $18.75 and PAIR is at $16. I am seriously thinking of averaging down this week...rather than sell and lose a whole bunch why not stick it out for the long term and wait for the stocks to go up $5 to $6 from this point and then get out with at least breakeven rather than wait for a 10-12 rise which may take a lot longer...just want opinions on this. I nor anybody has seen such choppy waters in the market for a very long time..so the rules have to change somewhat as to what you do.
