Laws were passed after Watergate that keeps the Justice Department, independent. A president isn't allowed to even talk to most people in the Justice Department. He doesn't control who or what they investigate. This is why what Trump did is so wrong. He fired the FBI director because he didn't like the fact that the FBI was investigating him.

This is my biggest problem with Trump. He is inexperienced, and like you, doesn't understand how the government works. If he did, then he would have used his power long ago to go after Hillary for her crimes instead of blathering about it on Twitter.

Inexperienced, yes. But not stupid at all. IMO he has an innate understanding of what is going on around him and some good advisors that tell him "hold off until the perfect time". So far anyone that bet against him or his timing has been humbled, including during his final push to get elected

Why look like a partisan hack attack dog when the Democrats will do the job for you. He has 3 more years. More likely 7 more years. When he complains about Sessions not doing anything, most people should know exactly why. Trump is not ready to do it yet. He goes for maximum effect at the opportune time.
