Tom,

Since you are work for BAY, I was wondering how you view the landscape regarding combining data/voice over the internet. Is it going to be the next great networking trend and how is BAY positioned in this area.

Thanks.

Paul

Tom,

As an engineer you shouldn't lump together technical and marketing information. Cisco has had a lions share of the 'core' switching market for some time with the Catalyst 5500 and 5000 family of switches. We just didn't sell into the 100mb access market (with the exception of some hub products inherited from a takeover).

A switch port that services an individual user is quite different from one that can support multiples. This is where cpu capacity, CAM size etc come into play. In much the same way that the router market is broken into core/medium/access - so should switching.

3com and Bay have dominated the lower end of the switch segment and we have taken the largest share of the core. The 'new' products being discussed here on SI target the low end where we have had little presence.

On a personal note - be careful about mentioning clients - our Investor Relations group told those of us (cisco engineers) on SI to be strictly technical and never to discuss financials or customers (since that is their job :-).
