Republicans like to point to revenue increases under Reagan without knowing or pointing out that he raised taxes many times, but the reasons for the tax increases were because his tax cut was destroying the budget. That first tax cut which went mostly to the rich was followed by many tax increases that hit the middle class including the Social Security tax increase which was quickly spent by Reagan. Not one penny of it was saved for future spending as he promised.

Since Reagan nearly tripled the debt I find it hard to give him any credit for raising taxes since he caused the problem in the first place when he lied about what tax cuts would do for the economy. They don't pay for themselves. Around 1/3 of a tax cut is paid for with more growth. The other 2/3 creates debt.

Since the Bush tax increase which was not supported by republicans in Congress and I doubt republicans supported the tax increases under Reagan, we've been dependent on one party raising the revenue that republicans spend and give away with tax cuts. This is not sustainable.
